What Makes the King’s Theology Program Special?

Theology students at King’s explore biblical, theological, moral, and spiritual concepts and practices, across different histories and cultures. Theological topics and methods often intersect with those of other disciplines, especially philosophy and history, but also literature, professional writing, political science, psychology or sociology.

Theological programs at King’s are flexible and interdisciplinary, allowing students to pair a theology major or minor with other fields of study.

Here's what makes King’s bachelor’s degree in theology unique:

  • Comprehensive curriculum: The theological studies program at King's offers a broad set of foundational courses in biblical studies, systematic theology, moral theology, and examines the way these have developed and changed through history and culture.
  • Flexible and individualized: With small classes, individualized attention, and a welcoming community, students in the theology program also choose elective courses, and many pursue an independent study with a faculty member.
  • Transformative community: King’s introduces the Catholic tradition and lives out its deep commitment to ecumenical and interfaith dialogue. Some graduates have found religious vocations in the Catholic Church, while others have discovered vocations in other Christian or religious communities. Students exploring vocations can do so with the help of the priests and brothers of the Congregations of Holy Cross who live on campus.
  • Pathways to success: A theology degree from King’s College enhances critical thinking, deepens your understanding of human history and hope, and strengthens your oral and written communication skills. 98% of our graduates are employed or attend grad school within six months of graduation.

Program Details

At King’s College, our major program in theological studies prepares students for various vocational pursuits. Theology students learn to think critically and carefully, read, interpret, and engage challenging texts, and develop excellent written and oral communication skills.

The major sequence equips students with a firm foundation for seminary or divinity school training or other graduate study in theology or religious education. Some theology students go on to serve as secondary school teachers or parish directors of religious education. Theology students are encouraged to elect appropriate courses in related disciplines, especially philosophy, English, history, and foreign languages, which are required for graduate study of theology or religious studies in many institutions.

In addition to our theology courses, we offer independent studies, particularly for upper-level students, and can also help motivated students arrange internships in the local community.

King’s theology program regularly offers the foundational courses. We offer biblical studies courses including Biblical Sources, Old Testament, and New Testament. Systematic Theology courses include Catholic Theological Perspectives, Mystery of God: Belief and Unbelief, The Church, and Who is Jesus?  Moral Theology courses include Christian Ethics and Christian Social Ethics. Historical Theology Courses explore the Early to Medieval period and the Reformation to Modern period.  Elective courses regularly include Environmental Ethics, Bioethics, Spiritual Practices/Spiritual Quests, and Theology and Service. Our curriculum encompasses the broad range of theological disciplines, ensuring that students are well-grounded in all of them, and able to develop a concentration in one or two of them.  After earning a theology degree from King’s College, graduates go on to have purposeful careers and lives of rich theological reflection.

Theology Clubs and Organizations
