English Literature Program Description
At King’s College, our English Literature degree program offers two distinct degrees: Literature (with the option of secondary education certification) and professional writing. The literature degree immerses students in the study of literature spanning centuries and miles. Students may choose from diverse literature courses, including east and west, African American women writers, and romantic British literature. Professional writing majors focus deeply on the profession of writing, taking classes in editing and document design, and getting hands-on experience through internships, all while studying fundamental theories of how and why writing works the way it does.
Degree Options
Students in English can choose among three majors: a Bachelor of Arts in English, a Bachelor of Arts in English with Secondary Education Certification, or a Bachelor of Arts in Professional Writing.
Bachelor of Arts in English emphasizes the analysis of literary and cultural texts in a range of historical and aesthetic contexts.
Secondary Education degree emphasizes the same knowledge and skills but with an added component of classes focused on teaching.
Bachelor of Arts in Professional Writing includes the study of the art of writing (both professional and creative), rhetorical theory (including visual and digital rhetoric), the practicalities of day-to-day workplace writing, and an introduction to some of the software and technologies on which professional writers (and their employers) depend.
Besides taking classes, students build their skill sets and resumes by getting involved with campus organizations, including The Crown, Regis Yearbook, and the SCOP. Junior or senior English majors may also be eligible to become members of Alpha Epsilon Beta, King’s College’s Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society. Becoming a member of Alpha Epsilon Beta will showcase your skills and academic achievements, allowing you to network, present at conferences, and qualify for scholarships.
