Major Projects and Campus Initiatives
King’s College is committed to holistic student development and transformative experiences in classrooms and on athletic fields and courts. Beyond academic excellence, the institution places a strong emphasis on co-curricular programming and formative residential living experiences for undergraduate students.
We recognize how vital the physical campus is to the student experience and have a renewed focus on campus gateway improvements that further expand, beautify, and refresh our facilities and nearby streetscapes.
Student Success Center
A complete renovation of the D. Leonard Corgan Library to both modernize interior spaces and repurpose the first level, this project will reinvigorate a key campus building and improve the student experience. The main level is redesigned to focus on serving students’ research technology and collaboration needs, while the top level of the library will be redesigned to accommodate in-demand individual and group study spaces.
The centerpiece and focal point of the project is a dedicated Student Success Center (SSC), which will be housed on the courtyard level. The highly visible and accessible SSC will centralize key functions and services that support students in every course of study and of every ability level. For the first time, the Academic Skills Center, Academic Advisement, Writing Center, Mathematics Center, Honors Program, and Achievement Plus will be brought together to more efficiently collaborate on serving our students’ unique needs. This top-priority project can be supported with gifts ranging from $5,000 to $2,000,000, giving donors the exclusive opportunity to affiliate their name or honor someone special with key components of this vibrant new space.
Frank & Carolyn Kowalski Center for Advanced Healthcare Education
Nestled at the intersection of campus and downtown, the Frank and Carolyn Kowalski Center stands as a beacon of innovation and opportunity. This visionary project is poised to redefine healthcare education in our region, serving as the cornerstone of King’s College’s groundbreaking doctoral program in occupational therapy. The transformation of the former Times Leader Building also represents the latest chapter in the College’s commitment to downtown revitalization and academic excellence.
The facility is equipped with cutting-edge integrated reality technology to give students practical experience in the classroom before they engage with real-life patients and clients. The new labs service the areas of pediatrics, splinting/feeding, activities of daily living, inpatient/acute care, outpatient, hi-fi media, and simulation/driving. There is also an expanded gross anatomy lab and exercise science testing lab.
Gifts ranging from $15,000 to $2,000,000 support the five floors and 60,000 square feet of innovation and advancement in healthcare. Naming opportunities include classrooms, labs, locker rooms, and study spaces, allowing donors to leave a tangible mark on the future of healthcare education.
Chapel of Christ the King
Step into the renewed Christ the King Chapel, where history meets holiness, and tradition embraces transformation. With its doors reopened in 2019, King’s College celebrates the successful revitalization of this sacred space, infusing it with renewed purpose and reverence.
Originally erected in the 1870s as the Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Chapel of Christ the King stands as a testament to Wilkes-Barre’s rich heritage and spiritual legacy. After a decade of closure, its restoration marks a significant milestone in preserving our cultural and religious heritage, offering a sanctuary for prayer, reflection, and communal worship once again.
The completed renovations have enhanced the Chapel’s accessibility, functionality, and aesthetic appeal, ensuring it remains a beacon of faith and unity for generations to come. Every aspect of the Chapel has been meticulously restored to better serve the spiritual needs of our students, faculty, and staff.
With gifts ranging from $5,000 to $500,000, donors can preserve and sustain the beauty and sanctity of the Chapel. Naming opportunities include holy water fonts, a community/meeting room, stained glass windows, and preservation of the historic coal altar.
Campus Beautification Efforts
As King’s continues to expand its footprint, a more visual demarcation of campus property will be created. Improvements will also be made to existing landscapes and streetscapes, offering a well-organized, safe, and welcoming atmosphere to current students, prospective students, staff, and faculty.
Outdoor furniture will be upgraded, ornamental trees and other shrubbery will be strategically placed, and outdoor signage will be refreshed where necessary. The outdoor improvements will add more greenery to enhance social and event settings and improve paved sections for safer travel on foot and greater accessibility.
Robert L. Betzler Athletic Complex Renovations
King’s College is currently home to 28 Division III sports teams, and more than 40% of students are student-athletes, which aligns with the College’s emphasis on co-curricular education. To better serve these students, the Betzler Athletic Complex will undergo improvements and additions in phases, with an eye toward right-sizing existing space and building out where permissible.
Currently, the Betzler Fieldhouse is an undersized facility that can be expanded. The expansion will occur in phases, creating additional locker rooms, right-sizing current locker rooms, and adding storage. Two new women’s lockers rooms will add approximately 30 more lockers; one new men’s locker room will add approximately 40 new lockers; and the existing training room and public men’s and women’s restrooms will be expanded.
The baseball and softball fields face challenges with wet turf and insufficient drainage systems. Both fields’ current turfs will be replaced with synthetic material. The softball field will receive new netting/fencing around the perimeter. The baseball field will undergo a larger renovation, with improvement upon the dugouts, bullpen, batting tunnel, press box, and storage area.
This large-scale project can be supported with gifts of up to $10,000,000 and a variety of exclusive naming opportunities.
