Tutoring Program
The King's College Tutoring Program—certified by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA)—creates an environment for success, providing student-to-student assistance through scheduled afternoon and evening tutoring free of charge, in most disciplines. Students build independence and effective learning habits through active-learning, increased confidence, and improved study habits.
Your tutor is there to guide you, not to complete your assignments. We ask you to please follow the guidelines below for an effective tutoring session. If you are not signed up, you will not be admitted to the tutoring session.
- Attempt your assignment prior to attending tutoring.
- List the course instructor as your primary resource before scheduling a tutoring session.
- Bring prepared questions, your class notes, textbook, and other materials.
- Stay as long as you need or until the session is over.
The Program provides support for two (2) hours per week per subject. A student may meet with Sheri Yech to discuss additional time or alternative methods for support.
Summer Sessions
Tutoring is available for King’s College summer courses based on tutor availability. All tutoring for online courses is virtual via Zoom or Teams sessions. Complete the Tutor Request Form to get started. You will then receive an email with information within 48 hours. If you do not, please contact academicskillscenter@kings.edu.
Semester Sessions
Fall semester tutoring will begin on September 3, 2024.
King's College uses an online reservation system for fall and spring semester tutoring sessions. You can easily find available subjects, days, and times that you can book up to eight (8) days in advance—and sometimes with same-day sessions available!
Available courses to schedule through our reservation system include most 100-level science, math, and business courses such as:
- BIO 113/210
- CHEM 113/114 and Organic courses
- ECON
- Math, especially all calculus courses
- MSB 110/120
- Physics 113/114
Simply create your account, set your preferences (if you list your phone carrier, you will be choosing text instead of email), use the calendar view or standard view to see available sessions, and finalize your selection. All tutoring sessions are held in Hafey-Marian Hall.
Due to high demand of specific subject areas, some sessions are only available during predetermined days and times and in 60 minute increments.
For more information on how to set up an account, please visit the ASC Moodle page for an instructional PowerPoint presentation.
Tutoring for Other Courses and Graduate Level Support
Tutoring for other classes , such as CJ, Neuroscience, Exercise Science, PSYC, general/core, and upper-level courses is available upon request using the Tutor Request Form. Please note that this form is for weekly sessions, not one-time test reviews.
Supplemental Instruction and Embedded Tutoring
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an additional form of tutoring for specific courses, instructors, or sections. The tutor attends class as a role model and note taker then holds review sessions each week for the enrolled students. Embedded Tutoring (ET) is a method of having a specific tutor matched to the course/section who will offer review sessions weekly. This tutor collaborates with the teacher on content. Please visit the ASC Moodle page for current sessions.
Become a Tutor
Tutors are selected through an interview process and the recommendation from their instructors or the Tutoring Coordinator. Qualified tutors must receive at least a grade of B+ or above in the courses being tutored or demonstrated equivalent experience. Tutors gain professional development through training and actual work experience, and, for those who meet specific requirements, may receive recognition as a certified tutor through CRLA. Tutoring is one of the most enjoyable jobs on campus. The satisfaction at having made a difference in someone's academic life is enormous. Tutoring is also a good paying job and hours are extremely flexible.
Tutor Eligibility
The best tutors are King's students who have already taken the course and received a grade of at least B+ or better in the course in which they wish to tutor, and recommendations from a faculty member. You are required to have a strong working knowledge of specific course content and must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0.
You must demonstrate effective interpersonal skills in working collaboratively with peers and teaching with compassion as you’ll need to teach another student how to study and review course material.
You must be a good problem solver and demonstrate organizational abilities in managing tasks, maintaining schedules, managing time, and completing your own work assignments thoroughly.
If you believe you have these skills and would like to become a tutor, contact the Academic Skills Center to schedule an appointment with the Tutoring Coordinator.
