Programs for Students
The King's-Flood After School Program
What started as a small volunteer translation services program soon became a comprehensive tutoring and extra help program on campus. As demand for these services increased due to the growing local Hispanic community, the program was moved to Daniel Flood Elementary School. At the same time, it took on a more professional approach under the guidance of King's Education Department.
Now in its 21st year, the After School Program continues to serve the community with the help of King’s education majors and other volunteers.
Pathways to College High School Mentoring Program
Since 2007, our Pathways to College program has assisted Hispanic high school students from the greater Wilkes-Barre area who want to enroll in a college or university after they graduate. Our team works with local guidance counselors to help identify potential candidates who can benefit from the program.
The program provides weekly tutoring sessions with King’s who can offer advice about applications and college life. The sessions also focus on developing math and literacy skills consistent with College Board (PSAT and SAT) and ACT testing, as well as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) disciplines.
Students generally participate for four semesters starting in the fall semester of their sophomore year. Weekly sessions take place at King’s College on Monday afternoons from 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.
By the second semester of junior year, participants can explore our Walking Through the College Admissions Process course, which focuses on a different aspect of applying to college each week. Occasional Saturday programming may also be available as needed.
Summer Residential Enrichment Program
This three-week program runs from late June through early July and is available to students who participated in the Pathways to College program during the academic year. Occasionally, other students are invited at the recommendation of their high school guidance counselor.
During the program, students reside in a King’s College residence hall from Sunday through Friday. Each day, students follow a schedule of classes as they would if they were attending college, including courses in English, mathematics, science, theater, leadership, and an elective (history, environmental science, or psychology). Students will also have access to workshops on career planning, study skills, and college financing, as well as fun social activities and the College’s athletic facilities.
Over 100 students have participated in the Summer Residential Enrichment Program since its inception. Normally, the class is limited to 20 participants.
King's College and the Hispanic and Latino Excellence Center sponsored by the McGowan Fund are grateful to The Prudential Insurance Company of America for its generous financial support of this effort.
Pathways to Success Middle School Program
We believe it’s important to engage students of all ages, so we also operate the Pathways to Success program for Hispanic students who are transitioning from elementary to middle school.
Middle school—grades 7 through 9—is the perfect time to introduce young minds to new possibilities, help them discover the value of education before high school, and inspire them to explore study topics that interest them.
The program meets twice a month and is built on national models that connect middle school youths with college mentors who can foster valuable learning experiences and discourage at-risk after school activities.
Program goals include:
- Introducing middle school students to a variety of academic disciplines
- Promoting wellness and physical activity
- Preparing students for the above Pathways to College high school mentoring program
- Giving students early access to the benefits of a mentoring program
- Building confidence and leadership skills that will foster success in high school
