Advisement Process
All students at King's College are assigned an academic advisor to assist students with selecting courses that meet the requirements, sequencing, and timing of the core curriculum and their major program. Students are expected to meet with their advisors at least twice each semester to ensure they are progressing smoothly and to address any questions or concerns that may arise. Academic advisors and students work closely together each year to:
- Discuss academic programs and resources that fit the student's abilities and interests
- Explore career paths and educational goals through elective course selection
- Monitor student progress in achieving academic, career, and college experience goals
- Address Academic Alerts from faculty
- Assist undecided students, alongside the Office of Career Planning, in selecting a major
Current Students
Current King’s College students register their classes online through their Self-Service account. However, before current students can register, they are required to meet with their academic advisor each semester during the Academic Advisement period listed in the academic calendar. Once they meet with their advisor to discuss what courses they should take, they will be released and permitted to register online on or after their assigned registration date.
First-Year Students
First-year students new to King’s College do not follow the same registration process as current students. All first-year students are assigned to a First-year Academic Advisor, and class schedules are prepared by these specific advisors and members of the Registrar’s Office. Students will receive their class schedule when meeting with an academic advisor during their Orientation/Advisement Session.
At the end of their first year, students who have designated a major are assigned an academic advisor from their major department; students who have not selected a major remain with an advisor from the Office of Academic Advisement until a major is chosen.
Please note: Before a student’s schedule can be created, all placement tests and the New Student Questionnaire must be completed by 11:59 p.m. on the dates listed below.
Deadline | Description |
---|---|
December 1 | For students starting classes in the Spring Semester |
May 1 | For students starting classes in the Summer Semester |
June 1 | For students starting classes in the Fall Semester |
Transfer Students
Students transferring to King’s College do not follow the same registration process as current students. Rather, transfer students are required to meet one-on-one with a Transfer Advisor to discuss their course of study, review transfer credits, and register for classes for the upcoming semester once they’ve made their enrollment deposit. To ensure proper course registration, we strongly encourage students bring the latest copy of their transcript to this meeting. Students may schedule an appointment with the Office of Academic Advisement after the dates listed below:
Deadline | Description |
---|---|
Mid-November | For transfer students starting classes in the Spring Semester |
Mid-April | For transfer students starting classes in the Summer or Fall Semester |
Re-admit Students
Former students who would like to return to King’s College to complete their degree must complete the Re-Admit Application. Once officially readmitted to the College, a student must schedule an appointment with the Office of Academic Advisement to register for classes.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an Academic Advisor?
An academic advisor is a person who assists students with the process of developing meaningful educational plans, which are compatible with their life goals. Academic advisement should be viewed as a continuous process of clarification and evaluation. Students are required to meet with their academic advisor every semester prior to registration. The academic advisor will help students understand the Core curriculum, a major’s requirements, and assist in selecting course options each semester. Academic advisors can also assist students with adding or dropping a course and changing their major.
Who is my Academic Advisor?
Students will find their academic advisor listed in Self-Service. The Registrar or Office of Academic Advisement can also look up advisor contact information.
How do I contact my Academic Advisor?
In the Self-Service main menu, select “Plan Your Degree and Register for Courses.” Click the Advising tab to see the advisor(s) listed. Students can click on the email icon or leave a note for their advisor(s). Since all faculty have differing office hours, students can drop by the Office of Academic Advisement to obtain faculty office information.
How do I schedule my classes for the first semester?
Before a student can schedule classes for the first semester, they must complete the New Student Questionnaire and necessary placement test(s), if required. Once these are complete, the First-Year Academic Advisor can create the student’s schedule.
When will I receive my class schedule for the first semester?
Students will receive instructions on how to access their schedule after meeting with an academic advisor during the Orientation advisement session.
How will I receive my schedule if I am unable to attend the Academic Advisement Sessions during Orientation?
Students will need to schedule an appointment with their academic advisor. If a student is unsure of who their academic advisor is, contact the Office of Academic Advisement at (570) 208-5872 or academicadvisement@kings.edu.
How can I add or drop a course from my class schedule? (New Students Only)
Unlike returning students, students new to the College cannot add or drop courses to their schedule on Self-Service. New students are required to discuss schedule changes with their academic advisor prior to the last day to Add/Drop a course during each semester, which is listed on the academic calendar.
How can I add or drop a course from my class schedule? (Current Students Only)
Current students can add or drop courses from their schedule directly on Self-Service as long as the course is open. Students should always consult with their academic advisor before adding or dropping classes. These changes can be made prior to the last day to Add/Drop a course during each semester, which is listed on the academic calendar.
How can I withdraw from a course?
Students who wish to withdraw from a course must complete and submit an official Course Withdrawal Form prior to the deadline each semester listed on the academic calendar. Students should always consult with their instructor and academic advisor prior to completing the form.
How do I know what books to purchase for my classes?
Once a student has their schedule, they can log into Self Service. On the left, select the icon of the graduation cap. Scroll to My Course Books where all course materials for your registered classes are listed. Registered students may also visit go.kings.edu/buybooks. Students will receive an email once King’s Cash and Book Vouchers are available.
How many credits should I take during my first semester?
To graduate with a bachelor's degree in the traditional four-year period, students will need to complete five courses, consisting of 15 to 17 credits, each semester. To be considered a full-time student, students must take a minimum of 12 credits. Students should always consult with an academic advisor to determine how many credits are best to take.
What is an overload?
An overload is when a student wishes to take a sixth course or more than 17 credits in a given semester. A GPA of a 2.5 or better is required along with the approval of the student's academic advisor and the Registrar. Additional charges apply.
Can I take an overload during my first semester?
Permission for an overload is primarily based on the student's previous academic achievement. As a result, first-year students are not usually permitted to take an overload.
How do I know which classes to take next semester?
Students should always review their Program Evaluation on Self-Service and check their Major Academic Planner before consulting with your academic advisor. To learn more, review the Registrar Office’s Course Registration resources.
What is the CORE Curriculum?
All students at King's College, regardless of their individual majors, participate in the Core Curriculum. It is, as its name implies, central to all undergraduate degrees at King's College. It lays the foundation for a liberal arts education that will be reinforced in the major program and continued throughout life. Core courses comprise a common educational experience that seeks to develop a community of learners; enhance learning through the sharing of viewpoints and ideas; and encourage a spirit of collegiality in the pursuit, discovery, and transmission of that knowledge and truth essential to intellectual growth, moral maturity, and personal fulfillment.
What is the Honors Program and Curriculum?
